STIPED – STImulation in PEDiatrics

Stimulation bei Kindern

STIPED is an ambitious global partnership which will result in five randomized double-blind sham-controlled phase I and IIa proof-of-principle clinical trials establishing effect sizes and studying safety and tolerability of tDCS on cognitive and behavioural outcomes in children and adolescents with ADHD and ASD.

Newspaper articles

  • The STIPED project and the studies carried out at the Bethel Clinic for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry were mentioned by the teacher Siegfried Kornfeld, in his article about “Autism Spectrum or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder AD(H)S”, which has been published in the regional Isselhorster Magazine for the church district of Isselhorst and the surrounding area.  In his article, Herr Kornfeld shares his experience with students diagnosed with Autism or ADHS and from his perspective explains quoting a couple of examples how broad the range of forms of autistic disorders is and how individual it is that there is probably no uniform concept for dealing with them in education and, on the medical side.  Thus, he acknowledges new approaches on the research side that not only promise help, but may also be able to provide it, like the case of the research done by the STIPED project. • Marianne Latinus and Camille Ricou wrote an article for the renowned network The Conversation France, which specializes in publishing news and stories written by academics and researchers.  The article, “Traiter le trouble du spectre de l’autisme grâce à la stimulation transcrânienne” (Treating autism spectrum disorder with transcranial stimulation), describes the challenges of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) as a therapeutic alternative for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder in the context of the STIPED project in which children and adolescents with ASD receive 10 sessions of stimulation (placebo or real) combined with exercises to help improving the recognition and understanding of emotions and intentions. • Two psychotherapists from Magdeburg University Hospital are involved in a European project on "Learning and memory in children and adolescents with ADHD". Psychologist Dr. Kerstin Krauel, head of the University Clinic for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatic Medicine of Children and Adolescents, has been studying the phenomenon of ADHD for many years. "The control of attention doesn't work in ADHD. And that's due to too little of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain. It enables us to endure boredom, to tackle a task and to focus on it," says the 52-year-old, who recently received an adjunct professorship. "ADHD has nothing to do with a lack of intelligence. • What if, in order to treat the brains of autistic people, we started by treating their stomachs? This may seem counter-intuitive. However, more than half of the patients suffer from gastrointestinal symptoms.  With a rich bacterial community of one hundred thousand billion bacteria, our digestive tract is a real organ whose imbalances can have dramatic and major effects on the brain and its development. More and more studies show that correcting the intestinal flora not only improves digestive symptoms but also reduces autistic symptoms and in particular behavioural disorders such as irritability, anxiety or stereotypies (aimless repetition of words or gestures).
